Köttl began breeding the rainbow trout in 1885 in ponds at Neukrichen am Walde and in the Vöckla R. and by the late 1960s, it is widespread in the provinces of Lower Austria, Burgenland, Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia, Salzburg, the Tyrol and Vorarlberg, except in high montane streams occupied by brown trout Salmo trutta (Ref. 13364).
